Plus Size Swim Shorts

There's no law that says women have to completely expose their legs in order to get in the water, but you'd think otherwise if you'd been shopping for bathing suits. Until very recently, the only swim shorts available were men's trunks, but women are catching on to the fact that we can have a lot more fun at the beach or poolside when we're not spending all our time making sure the bathing suit bottom hasn't ridden up to unacceptable heights. There's nothing more annoying than wanting to play in the water, but being afraid your suit can't stand up to the motion! In the past couple of years, surf fashion invaded the rest of the bathing suit world, adding board shorts and boy shorts to the separates available for women's' swimming gear.

And shorts aren't just for Juniors! We have terrific two piece options in all sizes, from the shortini to long-leg Bermuda length Hawaiian board shorts, available in solids, prints and florals. With the new separates in swimwear, you can mix and match tops and bottoms, choosing either a one piece with shorts over it or a two piece with shorts as a cover up. You can buy extra pieces to increase your swimming wardrobe, or stick with a shorts and bra top combination made to match. Add a sarong if you like, or a pareo for evening cover, add a shawl and a pair of strappy sandals, and you're set to go from the beach to dinner.

When you're deciding on the pair of shorts best for you, think about comfort as well as style. If you sunburn easily and are concerned about your skin, longer shorts are better: you can find board shorts that reach just above the knee. If you want to make the most of a nice pair of long legs, boy shorts are a great option, and you can find them in chlorine resistant fabrics. Tummy control is a must-have in boy shorts: look for Spandex or Lycra combinations that will give you extra hold where you need it. When you're spending the day playing in the sand with the kids, sometimes you just want to be cool and comfy. If you're looking for a pair of shorts styled more like men's swimsuits, you can always find a pair of nylon swim shorts that will flop nicely around your legs.

For a more slimming profile in shorts, get them long enough to cover the top three inches of your thigh. This length still leaves a lot of leg in view, but it covers up the places where most women tend to put on weight. A slit in the outside of the shorts leg is a nice addition, adding a little more length but still concealing the upper part of the inner thigh. As for patterns, you will find a lot of plus size swim suits come in black, sometimes with strategically places blocks of color. There are disagreements between the classic idea that women should always wear black to appear slimmer and the modern idea that bright colors are just as slimming and also good for the morale. Some would say that garment design is 99% of the matter anyway: it's much better to have a well engineered piece of swimwear that has a great shape, control features and an excellent fabric than to try to get by with a cheap, baggy pair of shorts. A good plus sized bathing suit will usually cost more than something you found at a cheap department store, but it will not only fit you, it will make you look really nice. If there's one thing every woman needs when she gets into her bathing suit is a shot of confidence, and a good suit will deliver. Imagine looking and feeling beautiful at the beach this summer!
